Noting that John and his father are at a R.A. private exhibition, Eastlake and Turner having each sent a ticket. Yesterday a drive to Richmond Hill to see the Miss Sydneys. Daily life at the Ruskins, from breakfast through evenings. Last evening Mr. H. Watson dined with them and sang most beautifully to her accompaniment. She cannot visit Carry Potter because Mr. Potter is seriously ill. All the Ruskins have colds, and John does not seem well--which is not surprising in view of his many engagements. Please tell "snob" to call on her; Brooks has not called and so her brother need not fear for "Prizie" (Mr. Tasker). The discrepancy between Mrs. Ruskin's remarks on domestic economy and practice is amusing: witness prices paid for eggs & chickens, wages given servants, luxuries provided at table. Mrs. Ruskin's dread of having to entertain at lunch, tomorrow, the Liddells and the Hon. F. Charteris, John having described Mrs. Liddell as "a very fashionable dashing woman ..." Seconded by Mrs. Ruskin, Mr. Ruskin has discouraged her efforts to interest him in a Merchant's career for her brother. Messages to family and Perth friends.

Euphemia Chalmers Gray, called Effie or Phemy, was born in Bowerswell House, Perth, and went to Avondale School, near Statford-on-Avon. She married the art critic John Ruskin on 10 April 1848; the marriage was annulled on 15 July 1854; she married John Everett Millais on 3 July 1855. She and Millais had eight children.
